The first time a puppy or kitten visits the practice is a really important time. The vet will give your pet a full health check, advice on feeding, flea and worm control, training and socialisation, micro chipping and dental care. It is also the time when we usually start the routine vaccinations.
Puppies can be vaccinated from 8 weeks of age, they are given two injections 2 - 4 weeks apart. We then recommend an annual booster vaccination thereafter. The first vaccination is accompanied by a full health check and also a weight check. In this way we are able to monitor your puppies development and keep an eye on their weight as they mature. These routine vaccinations protect your puppy from infection by distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza and Leptospirosis.
We also offer kennel cough vaccination, which is available for dogs and is particularly recommended for older animals especially in autumn/winter when the risk is greatest. Many boarding kennels require your dog to be vaccinated against kennel cough prior to entry, so it is always worth checking with them before you arrive there with your dog.
Kittens are vaccinated from around 8 weeks and are also given 2 injections 3 - 4 weeks apart. The cat flu and enteritis vaccine is the basic vaccine and would be required by a cattery if your cat ever needed to go in for boarding, but we do recommend in addition, a vaccination against feline leukaemia virus. Annual boosters are also recommended thereafter. As with puppies, first vaccinations are accompanied by a full health check and weight check.
Rabbits, We recommend that rabbits are vaccinated against Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorhagic Disease. They also need annual boosters and we do suggest that rabbits in high-risk areas are done twice yearly for Myxomatosis. Once again a general health check is carried out at the time of vaccination.
Rabies vaccines are also available for any animals that will be travelling abroad in conjunction with the pet passport scheme.
