Neutering

Dog neutering

We recommend that all dogs that are not going to be used for breeding are neutered.

Male dogs can be castrated from six months of age depending on their size and breed.
We recommend females are spayed 2 to 3 months after their first season. If however you would prefer to have a bitch done at a younger age, please phone us and we can discuss this with you.
There are major health benefits to neutering in both male and female dogs, for example reducing the risk of prostate disease in male dogs and reducing the risk of mammary cancer, and to prevent womb infections in bitches.

Neutering can be carried out on any weekday. Your animal would be admitted to our surgery between 8.30 and 9.30 am. They would have the operation that morning, and most patients will go home the same afternoon. Routine antibiotics and pain relief are included in the cost of the procedure

Cat neutering

Our practice recommends neutering of all cats not used for breeding, for both social and health reasons.
Male cats who are not neutered will tend to show antisocial behaviour such as fighting and spraying around the house. Fighting, as well as leading to many injuries will also increase the risk of your cat contracting life threatening illnesses such as feline leukaemia and feline immunodeficiency virus. In addition they will then spread these diseases in the cat population at large.
Female cats can come into season from as young as five months of age and can quickly become pregnant unless they are kept indoors. They will keep coming into season every 3 weeks throughout the spring and summer.
We usually recommend neutering at 5-6 months of age depending sometimes on the size of the kitten.

Neutering can be carried out on any weekday. Your animal would be admitted to our surgery between 8.30 and 9.30 am and have the operation that morning, most patients will go home the same afternoon. Routine antibiotics and pain relief are included in the cost
